Ruby league: Mayfield 29 - 6 Wath Brow

Date published: 24 July 2024

From the outset this result never looked in doubt as Mayfield outclassed their Cumbrian opponents in their NCL Premier Division clash on Saturday 20 July.

Four enforced changes again made it look like Mayfield could struggle to find their rhythm, but this was not the case as Sam Butterworth and Steve Wood's side slotted into first gear from the whistle and moved up as the game progressed.

Apart from a quiet spell in the middle of the game Mayfield dominated the Cumbrians, who had beaten them,14 - 0 on the opening day of the season. It only took Sean Slater five minutes to spot the deficiencies in the Brow defence and coast over from acting half back try, converted by Jordan Parr 6 - 0.

Mayfield continued to press the line and Wath Brow had nothing on the field that could hold the rampaging Zac Baker as he crashed through, Parr again added the two, 12 - 0.

Mayfield were playing champagne rugby now and Dakota Tolhurst was next on the sheet as he came onto a Cole Connolly pass after strong pushes from Gaz Ellison and Reece Hamlett, 16 - 0.

Wath Brow raised their game and looked more like the team we know they are but the Mayfield defence held firm, both sides slugged it out for the next twenty minutes until Brow broke the deadlock through their big prop, 16 - 6.

That was the last time they broke the Mayfield line and their score reignited the home side. Mayfield threw the ball about and looked dangerous every time they were in possession. A penalty from the scrum saw Parr opt to take the attempt at goal, which he popped over effortlessly, 18 - 6.

Some superb play from the forwards, instigated by Connolly saw Travis Long stroll through a massive gap for a score which Parr again converted, 24 - 6.

The forwards were now punching holes at will in the usually rock solid Cumbrian defence. The backs took advantage of this and Mayfield were unlucky not to extend the lead by even more. Tolhurst made good yards on the left before Slater made a great break down the touch line only to be stopped inches from the line, Lewis Butterworth stepped into acting half and managed to cross the line with four defenders attempting to stop him, 28 - 4.

With virtually the last touch of the game Connolly rounded off the scoring as he popped over a well taken drop goal. The final score was 29 - 6. a solid win for Mayfield which left the coaches pleased with the performance.

Once more Mayfield picked up injuries which meant they only had two available subs for the whole second half. There were some great performances from both ends of the age range, with Gaz Ellison and Nick Hargreaves putting in proper shifts in the forwards, while from the younger end Harry Sheridan and Oliver Morgan, who if you add their ages together are still younger than Hargreaves, both excelled.
