Christmas message from MP for Rochdale, Paul Waugh

A Christmas message from the Member of Parliament for Rochdale, Paul Waugh.

As Christmas approaches, Rochdale is glowing with light, joy, and community spirit. From the beautiful Christmas tree standing proudly outside our restored town hall to the twinkling festive lights across the borough, this season is a perfect time to reflect on what makes our town so special.

I was lucky enough to see that spirit in action at the Littleborough lights switch-on. Smithy Bridge Primary School pupil Xander brought smiles to everyone’s faces as he switched on the lights, and the wonderful performances by Wardle Junior Blast, St Mary’s and Stansfield School Choirs, and the Littleborough Brass Band reminded us of the warmth and talent we’re so proud of here in Rochdale.

Christmas is a time for giving – a chance to share what we can with others and offer a helping hand to those who need it most.

We must celebrate the incredible charities, volunteers, and community groups who go above and beyond to support others.

Whether it’s Springhill Hospice, Rochdale Council’s Giving Back Christmas Toy Appeal, or the inspirational leaders at Caring and Sharing Rochdale receiving their well-deserved King’s Award, their kindness makes a real difference to families who need it most.

And we can’t forget our volunteers and frontline workers who keep Rochdale running – not just at Christmas, but every day of the year.

From our NHS staff and emergency services to the Mayor’s chosen charities, their dedication and service deserve our heartfelt thanks.

Christmas is a season of kindness, generosity, and togetherness. To everyone across Rochdale, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, peaceful New Year.

Paul Waugh
