Talented teen clinches Gold at IBJJF Orange County Summer Open

Date published: 22 July 2024

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, 13-year-old Andrew Perez secured the gold medal at the IBJJF Orange County Summer Open, held at California State University on 14 July. This victory marks a significant milestone in Perez’s preparation for the upcoming world championships in Florida.

Perez, who has been training intensively at the Art of Jiu Jitsu (AOJ) in Costa Mesa, California, is gearing up for the major competition at the end of the month. His rigorous training regime is testament to his dedication and passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Having taken up the sport at the tender age of seven, Perez has risen to become one of the world’s top junior competitors, with an impressive collection of belts and medals to his name.

His training schedule is intense, as he practises seven days a week across various gyms, including Predators MMA and BJJ Academy in Manchester, Judo Excellence in Hebden Bridge, and RIO Grappling in Rochdale.

Despite his current success, Perez’s journey has not been without its challenges. He faced bullying in his younger years and struggled initially to master Brazilian jiu-jitsu. However, his perseverance and hard work have clearly paid off, inspiring not only his peers but also his family.

His younger brothers, Colin and Ethan, aged 12 and 10, have followed in his footsteps, becoming national champions in their own age groups.

They, along with the rest of the family, are confident in Andrew’s potential for success at the world championships in America.

Andrew Perez’s latest triumph at the Orange County Summer Open is not just a victory on the mats, but a testament to his resilience and the support of his family. As he looks forward to the world championships, his story continues to inspire and motivate those around him.
