Ian Henderson signs new deal with Rochdale AFC

Date published: 11 June 2024

Dale's all-time leading goal scorer, Ian Henderson, has signed a new one-year contract which will take him into his tenth full season at the Crown Oil Arena.

Henderson first joined the club in 2013, becoming a firm favourite amongst the Dale fans, with his goals helping the club earn promotion to League One in his first full season.

He made 343 appearances in his seven-year stay, scoring 126 goals, just four short of breaking the goalscoring record.

After two years away from the club, he returned in the summer of 2022, breaking the record with his 130th Dale goal in November of that year, to secure his status as a club legend. He added a further 11 goals and 41 appearances to his tally last season.

In total, he has made 434 appearances in all competitions, scoring 147 goals. As well as holding the club goalscoring record, he is also second on the club's all-time appearance list.

Rochdale AFC has announced that a number of testimonial events will take place during the season to mark Ian’s many achievements, as well as his contribution to the club.

After penning a new deal, Henderson had the following message for supporters: “I am very happy to be extending my stay at Dale for another year. It feels like just yesterday that I first walked through the doors at Spotland.

“Over the years, I’ve experienced both the highs and lows with the club, and I’ve always strived to support and uplift it on and off the pitch.

“The recent news of the Ogden family's takeover has breathed new life into Rochdale, marking the beginning of an exciting new era. I am looking forward to getting around the energy and positivity this new ownership brings.

“We have a talented group of players that are aligned and led by a forward-thinking head coach and dedicated staff. Being part of this squad and contributing to the new season is something I am genuinely excited about. My passion and drive remain as strong as ever, and I am committed to mentoring the next generation, sharing my knowledge and supporting their growth.

“The 2024/2025 season will be my testimonial year at this amazing club. Having spent nearly half my career here, I hope I’ve created lasting memories and moments of magic for the fans.

“This season is dedicated to you, the loyal fans who have stood by us through thick and thin. I am proud to wear the Dale shirt for another season, and I will give my all for the team. I can't wait to see you all as we kick off the new season.

“Up The Dale!”
