Date published: 24 October 2018

A Whitworth basketball star, who won a medal in this year’s Commonwealth Games, has been invited to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event in Birmingham.

Mollie Campbell, a Sports design and technology student, was the youngest player in the England basketball squad who brought home silver at this year’s Gold Coast Games.

Her mum, Fiona Harrisson, said: “Mollie is very excited, and I just don’t know how she’s going to beat this year! To be studying and playing at the standard she is, I’m so proud of her.”

Campbell, who is in her final year at Loughborough University, currently plays for Leicester Riders and the Great Britain Women's team.

Her basketball career began at the age of 12, when she followed in her brother’s footsteps and took up the sport, playing for Manchester Mystics.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is a prestigious televised sporting event and has taken place every year since 1954.

The 2018 contenders will be revealed on the night of the show for the first time.

The winner is the sportsperson, judged by a public vote, to have achieved the most that year. The public will also decide the Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year, celebrating 2018's standout memory.

Other awards set to be presented on the night include Lifetime Achievement, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, the Helen Rollason award - which recognises an outstanding achievement in the face of adversity - and the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero award to honour the most dynamic, forward-thinking and driven volunteers from across the UK

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year show will take place in front of a live audience of 12,000, with millions more watching on BBC One from 7pm on Sunday 16 December.
