Murder investigation after New Year's Day knife attack

Date published: 02 January 2025

A murder investigation is underway in Rochdale following a fatal knife attack on Sussex Street during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Police were called to the area at approximately 2.30 am on 1 January 2025, after reports of a severe knife wound sustained during a street disturbance. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, a 38-year-old man tragically succumbed to his injuries. His family has been informed.

A second man, aged 30, suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalised in a stable condition. The extent of his injuries has not yet been disclosed.

Detectives believe the incident was an isolated and targeted attack involving two individuals. Detective chief superintendent Neil Jones said the police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the case.

He said: “Following developments overnight, we have launched a murder investigation after the sad loss of life on New Year’s Day.

"My sincere condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.”

He added, “Our officers and patrols will remain in the area to provide visible reassurance to the local community whilst we appeal for more information from those who may have heard or seen something from last night and into the early hours of today.”

Police Appeal for Witnesses and Footage

Officers have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward. “We are keen to speak to anyone who can assist with our investigation, as we know the smallest bit of detail will help us piece together the moments that led to this tragic loss of life,” said Jones.

This includes individuals with video doorbell recordings, dashcam footage, CCTV, or mobile phone recordings that may have captured the incident or events before or after it.

A police cordon remains in place on Sussex Street, with an additional linked scene on nearby Essex Street as investigations continue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting incident 715 of 01/01/2025. Alternatively, details can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
