Jubilee Beacons

Date published: 04 June 2012

To round off the Jubilee celebrations, on Monday 4 June, beacons were lit in various locations throughout the Borough.

A network of over 4000 beacons were lit by communities and others throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, along with the Commonwealth and UK Overseas Territories to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

A beacon chain is a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents.

Each beacon burned for around an hour before being put out.

Local locations:

  • The top of the Municipal Offices
  • Milnrow Memorial Park
  • Bowlee Park & ground in front of St Leonard’s Church
  • Queen’s Park
  • Hollingworth Lake

BBC News has incorrectly reported that: "The National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont hosted what is believed to be the only beacon being lit on water."

In fact, the beacon at Hollingworth Lake was lit on water - the centre of the Lake - by Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club Bosun, Brian Small.

The beacon in Milnrow Memorial Park was lit by former Council Leader Irene Davidson.

The Queen's Pageantmaster, Bruno Peek, said he had been "overwhelmed" by the response to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Beacons event.

He said: "Our aim was to light 2,012 beacons because 2,012 have never been lit before, but by the end of the night we will have over 4,000 - that's truly amazing.

"The beacons will be lit from around the world from Tonga to the Falkland Islands and Malta to Kenya."

The Queen triggered the lighting of the final beacon by placing a huge crystal into a specially designed pod.
