Multiple arrests from off-road bike police operation

Date published: 17 September 2024

A major police operation targeting off-road bike nuisance in the Rochdale North and East areas took place on Sunday (15 September). Despite challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain, mist, and fog, the operation resulted in several arrests and the seizure of multiple vehicles.

The initiative, which involved officers, PCSOs, Special Constables, specialist traffic officers, the Drone Unit, and community volunteers, was aimed at tackling illegal off-road bike activity. However, no off-road bikes were spotted due to the poor weather in the moorland areas.

Undeterred, officers turned their attention to other issues. During the operation, one man was arrested for possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply, along with motoring offences. The suspect was found hiding in a garden after fleeing from a vehicle that had failed to stop for police. The vehicle had collided with another on Shawclough Road, though no serious injuries were reported. The vehicle involved in the collision was seized.

In a separate incident, a van approaching the collision scene was also seized after officers discovered it was not insured.

Traffic officers made further arrests after stopping another vehicle. Three men were taken into custody on suspicion of theft, which had occurred in Lancashire. Inside the vehicle, police found a large quantity of counterfeit goods and cash. This vehicle was also impounded.

Off-road bike nuisance has long been a concern for local residents, alongside issues such as drug dealing, speeding, and other traffic offences. A police spokesperson emphasised that such operations are crucial in addressing these community concerns.

A spokesperson said: “We will continue running these operations, which enable us to deal proactively with each of these priorities."
