Residents aim for £3,000 in dazzling Christmas lights fundraiser

Residents of Wrenbury Drive in Burnedge, Rochdale, are gearing up for another dazzling festive lights display this December, hoping to raise £3,000 for the local Springhill Hospice.

The tradition, now in its 25th year, has become a cherished event, attracting visitors from near and far.

Last year’s event brought in over £2,400 for Springhill Hospice, and residents are determined to surpass that total this year. The grand switch-on is scheduled for 5pm on the first Saturday in December, a time-honoured tradition on the avenue.

Resident Peter Marr explained the community's dedication to supporting the hospice: “Myself and other residents have been lighting up our area for quite a few years. It became so popular that we started to sponsor our local charity, the Springhill Hospice, a few years ago.”

 

 

Peter noted that last year’s display drew significant crowds. “The avenue was so busy at 5pm, and the display was spectacular. We’re hoping to raise even more this year, so any help in promoting this great cause will be wonderful.”

In addition to the lights, the nearby Spring Inn pub is contributing to the festivities by hosting a Christmas market and featuring brass bands to promote the fundraising effort.

“It’s not just about the lights, or even just about the fundraising,” said Peter. “It’s a real sense of community and Christmas spirit. People travel from miles around to come and see us. There’s a procession of cars driving by, and some people even come to knock on the door sometimes.

“Everyone comes together for a good cause at a special time of year, and it just gets better every year. Springhill Hospice is close to a lot of people's hearts, and it means so much to so many. Not to mention that it’s under-funded. So it just makes sense to support them in any way we can.”

 

 

The Wrenbury Drive residents have set an ambitious fundraising target of £3,000, which would be a record amount for their annual display. “If it’s not too ambitious, we would love to reach £3,000 this year, to top last year’s £2,500. It would be the first time ever getting to such a number, so fingers crossed we can get there,” Peter said.

Springhill Hospice provides vital care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones.

The hospice’s expert team works tirelessly both at the facility and in people’s homes, offering specialist care, emotional support, practical information, and help to maintain dignity and independence during challenging times.

The big switch-on is at 5pm on Saturday 7 December at Wrenbury Drive, Rochdale OL16 4PJ.
