Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To install a new pedestrian crossing on St Mary's Gate
Expected start and finish: Monday 23 September 2024 – Thursday 27 March 2025
Restriction and location: Temporary 30mph speed limit on a section of St Mary's Gate in both directions. This will begin at its junction with Union Street and continue to its junction with Spotland Road. Vehicles will also be prohibited from waiting at any time along this section.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface Norman Road and Albion Road
Expected start and finish: 8am–5.30pm each day on the following dates:
- Saturday 2 November 2024 – Sunday 3 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:
- Norman Road, from its junction with Dane Street to a point 178 metres away in a southerly direction.
- Albion Road, for its entire length.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Dane Street, Manchester Road, the old section of Manchester Road and Sparth Bottoms Road.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To maintain the tram tracks on Drake Street
Expected start and finish: 8am, Saturday 19 October 2024 – 6pm, Friday 8 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Drake Street. This will start at the junction with South Parade and continue to a point 178 metres away in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for buses will be South Parade, Newgate, St Mary's Gate, John Street, Molesworth Street, Milnrow Road and Drake Street.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To install permanent one-way barriers and signs for one-way working
Expected start and finish: Monday 21 October 2024 – Friday 20 December 2024 as and when required. Only one street will be worked on at a time.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:
- Ashfield Road: from its junction with Boundary Street to a point 10 metres away in a westerly direction.
- Castlemere Street: from its junction with Drake Street to a point 10 metres away in a southerly direction.
- Kensington Street: from its junction with New Barn Lane to a point 10 metres away in an easterly direction.
- Mere Street: from its junction with Tweedale Street to a point 10 metres away in a northerly direction.
- Osborne Street: from its junction with New Barn Lane to a point 10 metres away in a westerly direction.
- Vivian Street: from its junction with Ashfield Street to a point 10 metres away in a north westerly direction.
Temporary suspension of the one-way working on the following roads:
- Ashfield Road: in a south-westerly direction from its junction with Boundary Street to its junction with New Barn Lane.
- Castlemere Street: in a south-easterly direction from its junction with Drake Street to its junction with Tweedale Street.
- Kensington Street: in a north-easterly direction over its entire length.
- Mere Street: in a north-westerly direction from its junction with Tweedale Street to its junction with Drake Street.
- Osborne Street: in a north-easterly direction over its entire length.
- Vivian Street: in a south-easterly direction from its junction with Kensington Street to its junction with Osborne Street.
Alternative route: Alternative routes will be signed on street when the closures are in place.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To install a pedestrian crossing - Redcross Street
Expected start and finish: Friday 25 October 2024 – Friday 7 February 2025
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Redcross Street. This will start at its junction with St Mary's Gate and continue to a point 17 metres away in a northerly direction.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To facilitate new gas mains in the carriageway on Halifax Road
Expected start and finish: 8am, Saturday 26 October 2024 – 6pm, Monday 4 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Canon Street. This will start at its junction with Clarke Street and continue to a point 9 metres away in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Clarke Street, Dover Street and Sudlow Street.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To facilitate a new gas main on Halifax Road in the carriageway - Clayton Street
Expected start and finish: Saturday 26 October 2024 – Monday 4 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Clayton Street, from its junction with Halifax Road to a point 16 metres away in a westerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Halifax Road, Henderson Street and Division Street.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To replace a waste water cover on Union Street
Expected start and finish: 7pm, Tuesday 5 November 2024 – 4am, Wednesday 6 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Union Street. This will start at its junction with St Mary's Gate and continue to a point 20 metres away in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles is St Mary's Gate, Hunters Lane and Union Street.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To hold the Cronkeyshaw Common bonfire and firework display
Expected start and finish: 4pm–10pm, Thursday 7 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:
- Greenbank Road, from its junction with Whitworth Road to its junction with Eva Street.
- Dewhirst Road, from its junction with Greenbank Road to its junction with Binns Nook Road.
Temporary prohibition of waiting and loading at any time along the following roads:
- Fieldhouse Road, from its junction with Joy Street to its junction with Whitworth Road.
- Binns Nook Road, from its junction with Joy Street to its junction with Dewhirst Road.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To safely carry out the Norden Remembrance Sunday service
Expected start and finish: 7am–2pm, Sunday 10 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Woodhouse Lane from its junction with Shawfield Lane for a distance of 45 metres in a north westerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route will be Shawfield Lane, Edenfield Road and Woodhouse Lane.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To install a new gas mains supply in Grafton Street
Expected start and finish: Monday 18 November 2024 – Friday 20 December 2024
Restriction and location: Grafton Street: a section will be temporarily closed. This will start at its junction with Channing Street and continue to a point 20 metres away in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Channing Street, York Street, Crawford Street, Moss Bridge Road, Kingsway, Waithlands Road and Grafton Street.
Area: Rochdale
Reason: To reset a water manhole cover in Newchurch Road
Expected start and finish: 12.01am–11.59pm, Sunday 24 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Newchurch Road. This will start at its junction with Manchester Road and continue to a point 39 metres away in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Manchester Road, Queensway, Albion Street, St Martins Street and Vicarage Road North.
Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions
Area: Middleton
Reason: To carry out bridge works - Boothroyden Road
Expected start and finish: Monday 12 August 2024 – Monday 11 August 2025.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Boothroyden Road. This will start at a point 34 metres south of its junction with Boothroyden Close and continue for a distance of 27 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: There is no alternative route for vehicles.
Area: Middleton
Reason: To safely carry out the Middleton Remembrance Sunday service and parade
Expected start and finish: 10am–12.30pm, Sunday 10 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary road closures
Vehicles won't be able to travel along:
- Long Street: from its junction with the Assheton Way, Eastway, Long Street and Market Street roundabout to its junction with Manchester New Road.
- Manchester New Road: from its junction with Long Street to its junction with the Middleton Way and Oldham Road roundabout.
- Manchester Old Road/Middleton Way roundabout.
- Manchester Old Road: from the Manchester Old Road and Middleton Way roundabout to the Garden of Remembrance.
- Middleton Way/Oldham Road roundabout.
- Middleton Way: both sides for its entire length.
- Park Road: for its entire length.
Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions
Area: Heywood
Reason: To carry out required works to pavement and road on the Queens Park Road bridge and help traffic flow.
Expected start and finish: January 2024 – December 2024.
Restriction and location:
- Introduce one-way working in a northerly direction along Queens Park Road, from its junction with Heywood Hall Road to its junction with Bury and Rochdale Old Road.
- Introduce one-way working in a southerly direction along Bamford Road from its junction with Bury and Rochdale Old Road to its junction with Heywood Hall Road.
Alternative routes:
- The alternative route for vehicles wishing to travel along Queens Park Road in a southerly direction from Bury and Rochdale Old Road to its junction with Heywood Hall Road is via Bury and Rochdale Old Road (B6222), Bamford Road, Market Place, York Street (A58) and Queens Park Road.
- The alternative route for vehicles wishing to travel along Bamford Road in a northerly direction from its junction with Heywood Hall Road to Bury and Rochdale Old Road is via Bamford Road, Market Place, York Street (A58), Queens Park Road and Bury and Rochdale Old Road.
Area: Heywood
Reason: To repair an electrical outage on Ashworth Road
Expected start and finish: Tuesday 8 October 2024 – Tuesday 29 October 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Ashworth Road. This will start at the junction with Bury & Rochdale Old Road and continue to a point 48 metres away in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles is Ashworth Road, Edenfield Road, Bagslate Moor Road, Norden Road, and Bury & Rochdale Old Road.
Area: Heywood
Reason: To safely carry out the Heywood Remembrance Sunday service and parade
Expected start and finish:
- Temporary road closures: 9.30am–12.30pm, Sunday 10 November 2024
- Temporary no-waiting order: 8am–12.30pm, Sunday 10 November 2024

Vehicles won't be able to travel along:
- Bamford Road: from its junction with Dawson Street to its junction with Market Place.
- Bridge Street: from its junction with St James Street to its junction with Market Street.
- Church Street: from its junction with Hornby Street to its junction with L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.
- Hind Hill Street: from its junction with Pine Street to its junction with Market Place/L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.
- Hornby Street: from its junction with Pine Street to its junction with Church Street.
- L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way: for its entire length.
- Market Place: from its junction with Market Street to its junction with L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.
- Market Street: for its entire length.
- Pine Street: for its entire length.
- St James Street: for its entire length.
- Tower Street: from its junction with School Street to its junction with Brunswick Street.
- York Street: from its junction with Queens Park Road to its junction with Market Place.

Reason: To safely hold the Heywood Christmas Festival
Expected start and finish: 11am–6pm, Saturday 16 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary road closures
- Temporary closure of L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way for its entire length.
- Temporary closure of Hind Hill Street from its junction with Bow Lane to its junction with L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.
Alternative route:
- The alternative route for vehicles for the closure of L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way will be York Street and Hartley Street.
- The alternative route for vehicles for the closure of Hind Hill Street will be Fox Street, Bethel Street, Moss Street, Bamford Road and Market Place.
Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions
Area: Pennines
Reason: To facilitate the parking of a crane truck and positioning of a generator to assist urgent repair works in the substation on Sheriff Street
Expected start and finish: Wednesday 9 October 2024 – Wednesday 30 October 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Sheriff Street. This will begin at its junction with Newhey Road and continue to a point 26 metres away in a north easterly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Royds Street and Newhey Road.

Reason: To safely carry out the Littleborough Remembrance Sunday service and parade

- Peel Street: from its junction with Railway Street to its junction with Morgan Street.
Temporary no-waiting orders: Vehicles won't be able to wait at any time along:
- Station Road: on either side from its junction with Church Street to its junction with Railway Street.
- Peel Street: on either side from its junction with Station Road to its junction with Morgan Street.
- Church Street: from a point 28 metres east of its junction with Hare Hill Road for a distance of 12 metres in an easterly direction.
- Hare Hill Road: on either side from its junction with Lyndale Drive for 125 metres in a south-easterly direction.

Reason: To safely carry out the Milnrow Remembrance Sunday service and parade

- Harmony Street: from its junction with Moorland Avenue to its junction with Cornfield Street.
- Moorland Avenue: from its junction with Harmony Street to its junction with Wellington Street.
- Newhey Road: from its junction with Dale Street to its junction with the entrance to the John Milne Public House.

Expected start and finish: 1.30pm–4pm, Sunday 10 November 2024
Reason: To safely carry out the Wardle Remembrance Sunday service and parade.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of:
- Ramsden Road: from its junction with Wardle Fold to its junction with Wardle Road.
- Wardle Road: from its junction with Ramsden Road to its junction with Kings Grove.
Alternative routes: Ramsden Road: the closure of Ramsden Road will be a rolling closure from Wardle Fold to Birch Road so an alternative route isn't necessary.
Wardle Road: the alternative route for the closure of Wardle Road will be Ramsden Road, Birch Road and Halifax Road.
Area: Pennines
Reason: To replace a gas main in Silver Hill
Expected start and finish: Wednesday 13 November 2024 – Friday 6 December 2024 or whenever the work is completed.
Restriction and location:
- Temporary closure of Silver Hill for 90 metres, starting from a point 28 metres north west of its junction with Kiln Lane.
- Temporarily stopping vehicles from waiting at any time along Silver Hill for 90 metres, starting from a point 28 metres north west of its junction with Kiln Lane.
Alternative route: The alternative route will be Silver Hill, Croft Head Drive, Wildhouse Lane and Kiln Lane.
Area: Pennines
Reason: To replace a frame and cover in Milnrow Road
Expected start and finish: 7pm–10pm, Sunday 17 November 2024.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Milnrow Road starting from a point 50 metres away from its junction with Smithy Bridge Road for a distance of 20 metres.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Milnrow Road (Littleborough), Wildhouse Lane, Kiln Lane, Bridge Street, Rochdale Road, Milnrow Road (Rochdale), Albert Royds Street, Halifax Road, Smithy Bridge Road and Milnrow Road (Littleborough).
Area: Pennines
Reason: To replace the anti-skid measures on Chapel Gate
Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 25 November 2024 – 6pm, Friday 29 November 2024.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Chapel Gate from its junction with Dale Street to its junction with Delph Street.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Chapel Gate, Major Street, Smith Hill and Dale Street.
Area: Pennines
Reason: To hold the Littleborough Christmas lights event
Expected start and finish: 2pm–7pm, Saturday 30 November 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Station Road, from its junction with Church Street to its junction with Peel Street.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles is Church Street, Morgan Street, Peel Street, and Station Road.
