Rochdale’s Flower Studio celebrates 30 years amid heartfelt tribute to owner's beloved mum

Date published: 19 December 2024

A cherished and long-standing town centre business, Flower Studio, marked its 30th anniversary just three days after the passing of the owner's mum - a much-loved face at the shop.

The hugely popular kiosk on Yorkshire Street, owned by Beverley Richardson, has been a staple of Rochdale town centre for decades, weathering the storms of life and local change while continuing to serve the community with beautiful bouquets.

Beverley's mum June Eves, who played a key role at the kiosk and was known to many, passed away on 11 December. Beverley says that celebrating 30 years has also served as a poignant tribute to her beloved mum.

June had been a familiar presence at the shop, working alongside Beverley every Wednesday and Saturday since its inception in 1994.

Beverley shared many years with her mother running the shop, which at one point had three generations behind the counter when Beverley’s great-grandmother Madeline was also involved.

The Flower Studio is one of Rochdale’s longest-standing businesses, known not just for its floral offerings but also for Beverley’s unwavering dedication.

Rain or shine, Beverley has been a constant on Yorkshire Street, brightening the town centre with her blooms and her resilient spirit.

Beverley’s daughter, Silkyh, told Rochdale Online News: “She still turns up every day no matter what life has thrown at her, to serve the people of Rochdale and surrounding areas.

“People know her not just because of the shop but because of her presence and personality. She’s been a huge part of town centre life for many years, and people everywhere know who she is. I think she deserves to be recognised for 30 years of success.”

Reflecting on her grandmother’s passing, Silkyh added: “She lost her mum just a few days before the 30-year anniversary, so even though she’s celebrating, it’s a tribute to her mum, my nan. She was also a very popular face in the kiosk over the years.”

June Eves was fondly remembered for her humour and connection with the public, making her a recognisable and well-loved figure on Yorkshire Street.

Beverley said: “It’s really bittersweet to celebrate 30 years in business because of course we’re doing it without my beloved mum, who was such a big part of the shop.

“We have so many fond memories over the years, we’ve always opened come rain or shine and got to know lots of local people - it’s a pleasure to be a part of the community for so long.

“The town centre has changed so much in three decades, and the fact that we are still here and still going strong is something to be proud of.

She added: “It’s a very happy and a very sad time all at once. But I know my mum would be proud for me to carry on for many years to come.”

Beverley’s resilience has been a defining feature of the Flower Studio’s success. She continued to run the shop, even during significant challenges, including the Rochdale floods of 2016, only closing for one day following the death of her husband, Billy, in 2008.

The Flower Studio’s enduring legacy is cemented by its recognition as Business of the Year in 2009. Despite the challenges of a changing world, Beverley shows no signs of slowing down, carrying on her family’s floral tradition with determination and grace.

For 30 years, the Flower Studio has been more than a business – it has been a cornerstone of Rochdale life. As the town celebrates this milestone, the memory of June Eves and her contributions to the community remain firmly at the heart of the occasion.
