Police crackdown on off-road bikers in Rochdale moorlands

Date published: 29 September 2024

Police officers from Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, and Lancashire teamed up to tackle off-road biking in the moorland areas of Rochdale North and Rochdale East last weekend. Despite poor weather and reduced visibility, several groups of bikers were spotted causing disruption in the area.

One group failed to stop when passing police patrols and fled into the moors, alarming several horse riders as they passed. This led to a pursuit that started near Lobden Golf Course and continued through the Syke area. The chase ended with one rider being arrested for dangerous driving after failing to stop for officers.

Officers also issued four Section 59 warnings to vehicles and individuals on the Lancashire border, where they were found preparing to drop off off-road bikes. Section 59 warnings allow police to seize vehicles causing alarm or distress in an area.

Further operations are planned in the coming months, with officers from Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, and Lancashire Police continuing to collaborate. Authorities are urging off-road bikers to reconsider their actions, warning that those causing anti-social behaviour will likely face consequences.
