Construction begins on new school for students with autism

Date published: 26 September 2024

A ground-breaking ceremony has officially marked the start of construction on Heywood Academy, the newest addition to the New Bridge Multi Academy Trust (MAT).

The school, which is set to open in September 2025, will provide specialist education for 75 students aged 11 to 19 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).

Key stakeholders from several organisations attended the ceremony, including Clare John, CEO of New Bridge MAT, and Martin Horne, regional director at construction firm Tilbury Douglas, which is overseeing the school’s development.

Speaking at the event, Clare John expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating: “It’s great to be here breaking ground on our brand-new school, Heywood Academy.

"We’re really excited about this addition to our Multi Academy Trust and look forward to contributing further to SEND provision in the borough of Rochdale. New Bridge MAT is incredibly proud to be working alongside the Department for Education and all other stakeholders to deliver a new, much-needed provision for the area and the community.

"Thank you to Tilbury Douglas for their hospitality, and special praise to Max and his team for capturing the occasion so well.”

Max, a student at New Bridge, played an important role in the ceremony as the official photographer, documenting the day’s events. His efforts were warmly recognised by Ms John, who praised his work in capturing the milestone moment.

Heywood Academy is expected to become a crucial resource for the local community, offering much-needed support for young people with ASC. The school will enhance the borough’s provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), addressing a growing demand for specialised placements.

With construction now underway, excitement is building ahead of the school’s opening in two years’ time.
