Bridge replacement work on M62

Castleton bridge, which is almost 60 years old and carries the main railway line over the M62 between Manchester and Rochdale, has been demolished and will be replaced with a new bridge.

There will be nightly – 9pm to 6am – closures of the motorway in both directions between 9 September and 19 September.

The M62 motorway then will be closed in both directions from 9pm on Friday 20 September to 6am on Monday 23 September.


Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface Corbett Street and surrounding roads

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Friday 16 August 2024 – Wednesday 18 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads. Each road will be closed for its entire length.

  • Corbett Street
  • Aboukir Street
  • George Street
  • Medley Street

Alternative route: Alternative routes will be signed on street when the closure is in operation.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface roads in Passmonds, Meanwood and Spotland

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Wednesday 21 August 2024 – Wednesday 11 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Baildon Road, for its entire length.
  • Phoenix Street, for its entire length.
  • Churchill Street, from its junction with Rooley Moor Road to a point 160 metres in a southerly direction.
  • Clarkes Lane, from its junction with Spotland Road to a point 395 metres in a north easterly direction.

Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in operation. Pedestrian access won't be affected.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface some roads in Kingsway

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Sunday 1 September 2024 – Sunday 22 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Higher Wheat Lane
  • Lower Wheat End
  • Newbold Moss
  • Thornbush Way
  • Tollgate Way
  • Upper Hayes Close
  • Waterside Lane

The full length of each road will be shut during the closure.

Alternative route: Alternative routes for vehicles will be signed when the closures are in operation.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface Sparrow Hill and Lower Tweedale Street

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Monday 2 September 2024 – Monday 23 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads for their entire length:

  • Sparrow Hill
  • Lower Tweedale Street

Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in operation. Pedestrian access won't be affected.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface roads around Fieldway

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Wednesday 4 September 2024 – Wednesday 25 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Fieldway
  • Perth Road
  • Everest Street

Each of the above streets will be shut for their entire length during the closures.

Alternative route: Alternative routes for vehicles will be signed when the closures are in operation.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To repair a waste water sewer in Thornham New Road

Expected start and finish: Thursday, 5 September 2024 – Thursday 26 September 2024 or until the work is complete if sooner.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Thornham New Road. This will start at its junction with Lyndhurst Avenue and continue to a point 61 metres away in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles is Thornham New Road, Manchester Road, Chesham Avenue, Carnforth Avenue and Chatburn Avenue.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To repair a railway bridge structure over Belfield Lane

Expected start and finish: Monday 9 September 2024 – Monday 30 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Belfield Lane. This will start at its junction with Newbold Hall Drive and continue to a point 74 metres away in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Belfield Lane, Belfield Road, Samson Street, Albert Royds Street and Milnrow Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface some roads in Kingsway

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Monday 9 September 2024 – Monday 30 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Crawford Street, for its entire length
  • Bilberry Street, for its entire length
  • Morningside Close, for its entire length
  • Crowther Street, for its entire length
  • Sedgley Avenue, from its junction with Crowther Street to its junction with Weston Avenue

Alternative route: Alternative routes for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in operation. Pedestrian access won't be affected.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To resurface Mere Street

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Wednesday 11 September 2024 – Wednesday 2 October 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Mere Street, for its entire length.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in operation. Pedestrian access won't be affected.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: To hold the Milaad Procession.

Expected start and finish: 2pm–5.30pm on Sunday 15 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Aboukir Street, for its entire length
  • Ramsay Street, from its junction with Aboukir Street to its junction with Trafalgar Street
  • Trafalgar Street, from its junction with Ramsay Street to its junction with South Street
  • South Street, from its junction with Trafalgar Street to its junction with East Street
  • East Street, from its junction with South Street to its junction with Yorkshire Street
  • Yorkshire Street, from its junction with East Street to its junction with Regent Street
  • Regent Street, for its entire length
  • Taylor Street, from its junction with Regent Street to its junction with Foxholes Road
  • Foxholes Road, from its junction with Taylor Street to its junction with Foxholes Close

Alternative route: The closure of the above streets will be a rolling closure as the procession moves along. Due to the nature and duration of the event, it is not necessary for alternative routes to be in place.


Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: To carry out bridge works - Boothroyden Road

Expected start and finish: Monday 12 August 2024 – Monday 11 August 2025.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Boothroyden Road. This will start at a point 34 metres south of its junction with Boothroyden Close and continue for a distance of 27 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: There is no alternative route for vehicles.

Area: Middleton
Reason: To resurface the footpath on Broughton Close

Expected start and finish: 9am–4pm each day, Monday 9 September 2024 – Friday 18 October 2024 as required.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of Broughton Close, from its junction with Millbeck Road to its end in a north easterly direction.
Alternative route: There is no alternative route for vehicles.


Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: To carry out required works to pavement and road on the Queens Park Road bridge and help traffic flow.

Expected start and finish: January 2024 – December 2024.
Restriction and location:

  • Introduce one-way working in a northerly direction along Queens Park Road, from its junction with Heywood Hall Road to its junction with Bury and Rochdale Old Road.
  • Introduce one-way working in a southerly direction along Bamford Road from its junction with Bury and Rochdale Old Road to its junction with Heywood Hall Road.

Alternative routes:

  • The alternative route for vehicles wishing to travel along Queens Park Road in a southerly direction from Bury and Rochdale Old Road to its junction with Heywood Hall Road is via Bury and Rochdale Old Road (B6222), Bamford Road, Market Place, York Street (A58) and Queens Park Road.
  • The alternative route for vehicles wishing to travel along Bamford Road in a northerly direction from its junction with Heywood Hall Road to Bury and Rochdale Old Road is via Bamford Road, Market Place, York Street (A58), Queens Park Road and Bury and Rochdale Old Road.

Area: Heywood
Reason: To repair a leaking gas main on Heywood Hall Street

Expected start and finish: Tuesda, 3 September 2024 – Tuesday 24 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Heywood Hall Road. This will start at its junction with Bamford Road and continue to a point 40 metres away in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles is Bamford Road, Starkey Street, Queens Park Road and Heywood Hall Road.


Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Reason: To resurface some roads in Smallbridge

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm, Tuesday 27 August 2024 – Tuesday 17 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Steps Meadow, for its entire length.
  • Bellshill Crescent, from its junction with Albert Royds Street to a point 50 metres away in a north easterly direction.

Alternative route: The alternative routes for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in operation.

Area: Pennines
Reason: To resurface some roads in Wardle & Littleborough

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm, Tuesday 27 August 2024 – Tuesday 17 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Kings Grove
  • Queens Avenue
  • Heath Road
  • Brookfield Drive

Each of these roads will be closed for their entire length during the times listed above.
Alternative route: Alternative routes for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in operation.

Area: Pennines
Reason: To resurface some roads in Littleborough Lakeside

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Wednesday 28 August 2024 – Wednesday 18 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Wood Bank Road, for its entire length.
  • Milbury Drive, for its entire length.
  • Rakewood Road, from its junction with Bear Hill to a point 210 metres away in a north westerly direction.

Alternative route: The alternative routes will be signed on street when the closures are in operation.

Area: Pennines
Reason: To resurface some roads in Milnrow and Newhey

Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Saturday 31 August 2024 – Saturday 21 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of the following roads:

  • Raines Crest
  • Pearson Close
  • Bealcroft Close
  • Whitfield Crescent

Each road will be closed for its entire length during the closure. Pedestrian access won't be affected.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in operation.

Area: Pennines
Reason: To carry out maintenance work on the railway level crossing on Smithy Bridge Road

Expected start and finish: 7am–7pm, Sunday 15 September 2024
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of part of Smithy Bridge Road. This will start at a point 15 metres north west of the railway level crossing and end at a point 40 metres away in a south easterly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Smithy Bridge Road, Milnrow Road, Wildhouse Lane, Kiln Lane, Bridge Street, Rochdale Road, Milnrow Road, Albert Royds Street, Halifax Road and Smithy Bridge Road.

Area: Pennines
Reason: To replace gas mains in the pavement on Simeon Street

Expected start and finish: Between Tuesday 17 September 2024 and Tuesday 15 October 2024, this order will be operative between the following times on each day, as and when required:

  • Monday–Friday: 7.30am–4pm
  • Saturday–Sunday: 10am–4pm

Restriction and location: Temporary closure of a section of Simeon Street. This will start at its junction with Delph Street and continue to a point 144 metres away in a south easterly direction.
Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles will be Simeon Street, Kiln Lane, Dale Street and Chapel Gate. Access will be maintained for residents and utility services only.
