Date published: 02 September 2024

Smoke was seen for miles over Heywood this weekend after a fire broke out at a garage. Flames took hold of Baba's Hand Car Wash and Tyres on Bury Street shortly after 7pm on Saturday (31 August).

Three fire engines swiftly arrived at the scene, with crews wearing breathing apparatus and deploying jets to combat the fire. They remained at the site for approximately an hour.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 7pm yesterday (Saturday 31 August), three fire engines from Rochdale and Heywood fire stations were called to attend a fire involving tyres at a commercial garage on Bury Street, Heywood.

“Crews arrived quickly and used two hose reels, breathing apparatus, a dry powder extinguisher and two thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire. Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately one hour at the scene.”
