Conservative leader's column: Concern over winter fuel allowance cuts

Date published: 01 September 2024

Steve Anstee is the leader of the local Conservative party in Rochdale and a councillor for Bamford.

This month he dedicates his column to concerns over winter fuel allowance cuts, and key Rochdale developments including a makeover of Rochdale Memorial Gardens.

Dear residents,

I hope this month’s update finds you well as we start to transition into the cooler months of the year.

There have been developments both nationally and locally that I want to discuss with you this month, as they directly impact our community here in the Borough of Rochdale.

One of the most pressing concerns for many of our residents is the recent decision by the current government to scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance.

This allowance has been a lifeline for many elderly and vulnerable people in our community, helping them to keep their homes warm during the coldest months and alleviating the financial burden of increased energy costs, which are again on the rise.

The removal of this support is deeply concerning, especially as we approach winter. Many households will now face difficult choices between heating their homes and other essential expenses. I want to assure you that our local Conservative group will continue to advocate for policies that support and protect our residents. We will be working closely with the council to find ways to assist those affected by this cut and will press the government to reconsider this decision in light of its potential impact.

On a more positive note, recent economic figures have shown that the UK economy is demonstrating resilience and steady growth despite global challenges. These encouraging signs are, in large part, the result of prudent economic management by the previous Conservative government.

Strong economic management at all levels of government is crucial, as it provides the resources needed to invest back into our communities, improve public services, and support those in need.

Armistice Day - Service at Rochdale Cenotaph

Locally, one of the most important parts of Rochdale Memorial Gardens is in line for a makeover ahead of Remembrance Sunday commemorations later this year. More than 800 square metres of paving immediately around and behind the Grade I-listed cenotaph will be replaced with high-quality, heritage stone.

Extensive repairs to the stone around the sunken gardens will also take place as part of the project.

The work follows the restoration of Town Hall Square and Rochdale Town Hall and will bring the area around the cenotaph up to the same spectacular standard, further enhancing the whole town centre conservation area.

In addition, progress is being made on the transformation of Touchstones Rochdale. A contractor has now been appointed to lead this project, which will see the much-loved building transformed into a creative and cultural hub with new flexible performance and creative studio spaces, meeting rooms, and improved galleries.

As always, I encourage you to reach out with your thoughts, concerns, and suggestions. Your input is invaluable in guiding our efforts to represent you effectively. Thank you for your continued support and engagement.

Until next time,
Steve
