St John the Baptist RC Church in Rochdale is welcoming visitors throughout September as part of the National Heritage Week celebrations.

This historic church, located at 1 Dowling Street, has long been a central part of the community and is offering a unique opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore its rich heritage.

Founded in 1830 and rebuilt in 1927, St John the Baptist RC Church stands proudly at the corner of Maclure Road and Dowling Street, directly opposite the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum.

The church's prime location in the heart of Rochdale has made it a significant landmark and a gathering place for the local community.

Pat Smithies, a member of the St John the Baptist RC heritage team, spoke about the church's role in the community: "St John’s has always been a place for the community to come together and meet, situated as it is in the gateway to the town.

"Rochdale itself has always been a welcoming place and has seen many waves of immigration over the years with people bringing their experiences and culture to enrich the area."

Despite changes in the local population, the town retains a strong sense of public pride and shared experiences. The church aims to celebrate this by opening its doors to the diverse communities of Rochdale, as well as visitors from further afield.

"We want to open the building up to our diverse Rochdale communities and visitors to the town to enjoy the heritage on their doorstep," said Smithies.

Whether you’re a long-time resident or a curious visitor, the church offers a welcoming space to reflect on the shared heritage that continues to shape Rochdale today.

The doors will be open on Saturday 7, Sunday 8, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September from 11.00am to 3.00pm each day.
