Date published: 26 August 2024

Rochdale Town Hall buzzed with excitement as it hosted the South Asian Heritage Month Festival, a vibrant celebration of culture and community.

The event, held on 15 August 2024, was organised by the CVD Lipids Team from Living Well, led by Sanya and Mohammad, in partnership with Rochdale Town Hall, BACP, and various local organisations. Over 600 attendees came together for this festive occasion.

Designed to thank the community and partners for their support of the Lipids Project and contributions over the past year, the festival featured morning and afternoon sessions that highlighted the rich diversity of South Asian culture.

Rochdale mayor, Councillor Shakil Ahmed officially opened the festival with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The festival showcased an array of cultural activities, including a tuk-tuk and bridal fashion show by BACP, a fashion show hosted by Aspire2Inspire’s Aspire HAF Club, and a Nasheed performance and workshop by Young Khadims.

Zeal Empowerment captivated the audience with spice art and herb planting, while Crescent Community Radio displayed the Punjab Lives Project boards and recorded live podcasts.

Awakening Minds energised the crowd with Bollywood Zumba, and the Dhol Drummers provided lively performances. The entrance, adorned with mannequins in traditional South Asian attire, added to the festive atmosphere.

Local organisations and volunteers were crucial to the festival’s success, contributing resources, expertise, and ensuring a smooth, welcoming experience for all attendees.

Attendees, stallholders, and collaborators provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many eager to return next year. The festival’s success lays a strong foundation for future South Asian Heritage Month celebrations, with plans already underway to enhance and expand the event.

Special thanks are extended to Victoria Hilton for securing the venue, and to all volunteers, contributors, and collaborating organisations who made the event possible.

Heartfelt gratitude also goes to the BACP (Bangladesh Association Community Project) for their outstanding support in setting up and providing essential resources for the festival.

The South Asian Heritage Month Festival at Rochdale Town Hall proved to be a remarkable celebration of culture and community, setting the stage for even more spectacular events in the future.
