Appointments cancelled after fire at medical centre

Date published: 12 August 2024

A busy medical centre in Whitworth has been forced to close and appointments have been cancelled after a fire broke out in the building this morning (Monday 12 August).

Emergency services rushed to Whitworth Medical Centre on Market Street just before 8am to put out a fire, which Rochdale Online understands has damaged a large part of the building.

Fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service have attended the scene, with some officers still on-site at the time of publication.

Whitworth Medical Centre posted: “We won’t be open today and unlikely tomorrow due to fire damage at the surgery.

“Anyone who has an appointment today and tomorrow, please do not attend. We will reschedule everyone as soon as possible.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: At 7.58, three fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue, along with one fire engine from Bacup attended a commercial building fire on Market Street, Whitworth.

“Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire. Crews are still in attendance.”
