Rochdale leads in dementia diagnosis rates, new research reveals

Date published: 16 August 2024

New research has revealed that nearly a third of dementia patients aged 65 or over in the North West remain undiagnosed, yet Rochdale boasts one of the best diagnosis rates.

The study, which analysed the latest NHS Primary Care Dementia Data, found that while over 63,000 patients with dementia are recorded in the region, the actual number of sufferers is estimated to exceed 92,000.

Data from Mobile Annexe Ltd showed that in the North West, 31.2% of dementia patients remain unrecorded, a significant portion of the population struggling without diagnosis and the necessary support. However, Rochdale boasts one of the highest diagnosis rates at 75.5%, along with Salford and Bury, with figures at 80.4%, and 77.3% respectively.

Gary Clayden-Smith from Mobile Annexe Ltd commented on the findings: “Each figure in this report represents a person, somebody's parent, grandparent, friend, colleague, or neighbour, facing the challenges of dementia.

"The fact that the estimates show actual figures are much higher than recorded really highlights the hidden nature of dementia, meaning many people are struggling without a diagnosis and the recognition and support they need.

“It’s a reminder to always check up on our loved ones, and if they’re showing signs of dementia, like memory loss, difficulty concentrating, or struggling to carry out everyday tasks, then please urge them to book an appointment and get checked out.”

While Rochdale's high diagnosis rate is a positive sign, the overall underdiagnosis across the North West underscores the need for increased awareness and medical support for dementia patients.
