Darnhill School families embrace healthy cooking in 10-week course

Date published: 08 August 2024

Pupils and parents from Darnhill School recently participated in a 10-week healthy cooking course, which provided a unique opportunity for families to cook nutritious meals together.

Four families attended each week, preparing a variety of delicious dishes, including 'Fakeaway' chicken, pitta pizzas, chickpea and spinach curry, chocolate cakes, fruit kebabs, cheesecake, spicy wedges, and many more.

This initiative allowed families to experiment with recipes they might not have tried at home and learn about healthy eating under the guidance of Chery Nield, community nutrition assistant from Your Trust Rochdale.

The course culminated in a celebration event where certificates were awarded to all participants. A standout moment was when a parent, who had humorously been dubbed "Can Cook Won't Cook" due to her initial reluctance in the kitchen, received a special certificate acknowledging her progress.

The commitment of the participants, who attended every week, was commendable. Their willingness to try new foods and the friendships formed among the parents were highlights of the programme.

One student remarked that having his mum attend each week felt like she was a teacher, highlighting the positive impact of the experience on family bonds.

Gratitude was extended to Emma Kershaw, senior community development officer from Healthy Lifestyles Rochdale Your Trust, for her support in facilitating the sessions. Funding from Cash for Kids enabled the purchase of ingredients each week.

Organisers are already looking forward to continuing the successful family cooking sessions with Your Trust in September.
