Action-packed start for 1st Milnrow Explorer Scouts

Date published: 09 December 2023

The 1st Milnrow Explorer Scouts have had an action-packed three months since opening in September.

Through their youth-led activities and adventures, supported by adult volunteers, the explorers (boys and girls, aged 14-17) have been encouraged to develop skills for life, including asking the bigger questions, thinking on their feet, being part of a team and always having a backup plan.

In the short time since September, the explorers have learnt emergency aid skills, budgeting, have taken part in charity fundraising, map reading, as well as a night hike.

They also took part in this year’s Manchester Monopoly Run, a city-wide scavenger hunt for teams of scouts and explorers that puts their navigation, communication, and teamwork skills to the test.

Lead volunteer Margaret said: “It is great to watch the young people grow in confidence and to learn to respect each other as they are given more power to lead themselves at this age whilst being supported when they need it.

“We are always on the lookout for new volunteers who wish to gain new skills and get involved; this is needed right from squirrels (four- to five-years-old) through to beavers (six- to eight-years-old), cubs (eight- to 10-and-a-half-years-old), scouts (10-and-a-half- to 14-years-old) and explorers (14 to 17-years-old).

1st Milnrow meets at various venues around the village, details of times and dates and how to get involved can be found here.
