Temporary speed awareness signs for Market Street, Whitworth

Date published: 08 August 2023

Temporary speed awareness signs will be installed on Market Street in Whitworth later this year.

The signs will follow a site visit by Lancashire County Council and the police, to assess the cause of a collision which saw a woman die at the scene last month.

Temporary signage reminding drivers to be considerate of their speed will be installed between Oakenshaw Avenue and Dell Road between October and December this year, and again between April and June 2024.

Similar plans will also take place in Britannia, Bacup.

Whitworth & Bacup County Councillor Scott Smith posted online: “The County Council will be undertaking a site visit, alongside the police, to assess the cause of the recent incident and its association with other recent incidents. Following this visit they will consider whether any road safety measures are required.

“It is important to be clear that requests for more intensive interventions are not taken lightly. For example, a recent speed survey at the junction of Tonacliffe Road and Oakenshaw Avenue - an area of concern for residents - found an average speed of 20mph.”

Lancashire County Council did not respond to our request for further details.
