Springhill's Coffee @ the Craven closes

Date published: 14 July 2023

Springhill Hospice has closed its Coffee @ the Craven café, citing “the steep increase in running costs and ongoing struggles of the economic climate.”

The move comes after Springhill Hospice closed and sold three of its charity shops due to the economic climate.

The hospice, which is a registered charity, revealed earlier this year that it is facing a £1million shortfall in funding as it costs around £15,000 a day to fund the care it provides. More than half of this needs to come from donations.

The café’s last opening day was 30 June, with a special buffet during the second week of July to thank the volunteers.

A spokesperson for Springhill Hospice said: “It has been enjoyed by a loyal customer base since reopening last August, and every avenue has been explored prior to the extremely hard decision to close was made.

“We are so grateful to the incredible team of staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly over the last 10 months since Coffee @ the Craven reopened its doors following the pandemic - thank you for everything.”

Coffee @ the Craven originally opened in 2014 to generate income for the hospice, but closed in February 2020 as it was no longer making money.

It reopened in August 2022 after a refurbishment.
