Fabdance Centre dancers top the leaderboard at Manchester Freestyle Dance competition

Date published: 06 July 2023

Mia-Grace Walsh and Christopher Booth from Fabdance Centre in Rochdale danced their way to the top of the leaderboard at the Manchester Freestyle Dance competition in Flixton last weekend (Sunday 2 July).

They both placed first in the U6 category, resulting in a life loss each in their section – a fantastic achievement in the dance world.

In dancing, competitors can move up a section after losing three lives in their section; the number of lives lost is determined by the number of competitors in the first round of the event.

Mia also placed first in her slowdance section and placed third in her freestyle disco section.

The achievement is made even more impressive given that both Mia and Christopher have sensory issues: Christopher wouldn't dance at his first competition due to the loud music and it was uncertain if the sport would be suitable for him.

However, he landed the first place accolade at the Manchester event, which was his second contest.

Twins Neve and Romy Devereux won the U12 section which resulted in a life loss and they have now moved up a section.

Three Fabdancers – Mia-Grace Walsh, Lyla and Lois Briddon – also travelled to the Humberside championships in Hull last month with fantastic results.

Mia placed second in her slowdance section which resulted in a life loss and therefore moved up sections.

Lyla Briddon placed in the top 3 in all of her sections, gaining a first place in her slowdance, winning the championship title and gaining a life loss. She also won the pairs with sister Lois.

Dance teacher and principal of Fabdance, Fiona Briddon, says the children have taken to it "so well" and now “love the competition life."

She added:"We never know what to expect, so to come away with first place, which also included losing a life, is a fantastic achievement."
