Jobcentre support event for over 50s seeking employment

Date published: 13 June 2023

Jobseekers over the age of 50 are invited to a special support session at the Rochdale Jobcentre on Friday (16 June).

The extra support comes as part of the new government measures to tackle unemployment in the over 50s who claim benefits.

From 10.30am to 12noon, there will be a mid-life MOT session taking place, which has been designed to help Universal Credit claimants aged 50+ consider ways to overcome barriers to employment, the benefits to improving earnings and savings potential, and retirement planning.

As of May 2023, there are 1,720 people over the age of 50 claiming Universal Credit or Jobseekers' Allowance - making up around 20% of the borough's total claimants.  More people aged 50+ are now claiming the benefits than the 18-24 age category.

Some 50+ Universal Credit claimants may not be aware of:

  • their employment skills set and strengths
  • suitable career options available to them
  • how to balance work and health conditions
  • how long they need to continue working before retirement
  • what their income is likely to be in retirement

Molly Brown, DWP Local Partnership Manager said: “We know that by targeting personal support to every jobseeker, people gain the confidence to develop their abilities and skills to re-join the work force, or progress in their career.

“That’s why Work Coaches are working hard, ensuring jobseekers know how they can benefit from the huge amount of support available. This includes financial help coming soon through increased Universal Credit childcare payments.

“Specialist support also continues to be available for those aged 50 plus, or with a health condition, so they remain connected with opportunities.

“During the busy summer season, jobcentres are focused on working with employers to increase the supply of new workers to help fill their vacancies.”
