Willows Dementia Hub expands to second service at Moss Bridge House

Date published: 30 May 2023

Following on from the success of The Willows Dementia Hub, a second Willows comfort day service has opened at Moss Bridge House in Kingsway.

The Willows Dementia Hub opened in 2018 and supports more than 60 people living with dementia each week.

Dementia is a growing problem in the UK, with 1 in 3 people born this year developing dementia in their lifetime. There are estimated to be around 2,000 people living with dementia in the borough of Rochdale.

The Willows at Moss Bridge will enable the team to support more people with dementia to remain in their own homes for longer, providing up to 30 places per day. The new centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm, with plans to extend opening to a weekend in the future.

Danielle Dutton from The Willows said: “The main focus of the comfort day service is social interaction, preventing loneliness and encouraging friendships to form. We find that being stimulated during the day also encourages a healthy sleep pattern which has a positive impact on mental wellbeing.

“Our days are filled with lots of activities, which are all tailored to our services users' needs and abilities, from arts and crafts, baking, armchair exercises and much more. We also have strong links with outside agencies - get up and grow visit regularly to hold a gardening workshop, and the Halle orchestra visit monthly to perform for our service users.

“We also love to spend as much time outdoors as we can.”

Danielle continued: “Service users enjoy a nutritious two-course lunch daily, all homemade and freshly prepared by our chefs at The Woodlands at The Willows Café. We also have plans to offer additional services, such as podiatry, to our service users.

“As well as being fantastic for people living with dementia, comfort days provide a much-needed carers break for family and friends, allowing them some time out from their caring role.”
