Local law firms support Springhill Hospice with free wills initiative

Date published: 01 June 2023

Local law firms are supporting the local hospice by producing wills for free throughout the year in return for a charity donation.

AST Hampsons, JBHS, Latimer Lee, Molesworths Bright Clegg, Temperley Taylor, and Whitestone are all offering local residents the opportunity to produce a will for free, in return for a donation to Springhill Hospice – a local charity that provides vital, palliative care for people with life-limiting illnesses, as well as offering support and advice for their loved ones.

The charity’s “Make a Will” campaign will see solicitors waive their fee for writing a basic will, throughout June in return for a suggested donation of £100 for a single, or £180 for a joint will.

Each solicitor will waive their fees for a specified month of the year:

  • May – Temperley Taylor
  • June – JBHS
  • July – Latimer Lee
  • August – AST Hampsons
  • October – Molesworths Bright Clegg
  • November – Whitestone

In the past year alone Springhill Hospice’s dedicated team has helped over 2,500 people.

While all the charity’s services are free of charge, the running costs of the hospice equate to £14,795 a day (more than half the hospice has to fund itself).

Rebecca Abbott, a partner and wills specialist at JBHS, said: “This is a fantastic initiative that raises funds for a very important cause.

“At JBHS we really value these opportunities to give back to the community where many of our staff live and work, and Springhill Hospice is a cause particularly close to many of our hearts.”

Paul Dixon, a partner at Molesworths Bright Clegg, said: “As longstanding supporters of Springhill Hospice, participating in the “Make a Will” campaign is one of the ways in which we can support the hospice and the amazing service it provides for our local communities. I would urge anybody thinking of making a charitable bequest in their will to consider Springhill Hospice.”

Springhill Hospice supporter engagement fundraiser, Rachel Cutler said: “I recommend that everyone has a will in place to safeguard their loved ones' futures. Every donation made to Springhill in return for a free will helps to provide palliative care for anyone that needs it in the Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood area.”

Rebecca added: “No one likes to talk about death, but making a will is really important for so many reasons.

“Not least if you want to have some control over how your money, property or possessions should be allocated after you pass away.

“A will means that what you want to happen will be listened to, and it also helps to alleviate some of the stress that your loved ones might feel after you die. Many people also choose to leave a donation to a charity that has touched their lives in one way or another, such as Springhill Hospice, so that donation can also be factored into the will.”
