Bags of litter removed from Norden in annual Great British Spring Clean

Date published: 20 March 2023

More than 80 volunteers sprang into action to clean up Norden on Saturday (18 March) for the annual Great British Spring Clean.

Many volunteers, businesses and groups like The Birtle Trust, NEEVA (Norden Environmental & Economic Village Association), Norden In Bloom, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Norden Scout Group (Cubs), Norden W.I., The Friends of Taylor Park, H Bell and Sons, Total Smart Solutions, Norden ward councillors and The Friends of Ashworth Valley to name a few, were armed with litter pickers and spruced up the village, including Greenbooth, Ashworth, Caldershaw, Rooley Moor and Birtle.

In total, 87 volunteers collected around 210 bags of litter, plus a few larger items, including a sofa.

The event was sponsored by the Norden Co-op, which supplied refreshments, and the Norden Bowling & Social Club, which hosted and cooked for all the volunteers after their hard work.

Paul Ellison, local Keep Britain Tidy #LitterHeroes ambassador, said: “I would like to thank each and every volunteer for again making this year another litter-busting event; you are all brilliant.

“A big shout out to Rochdale Borough Council, for the collection of the rubbish, the extra litter-picking equipment, and always supporting the Big Spring Clean, and also a big thank you to the Norden Co-op and Norden Bowling & Social Club for sponsoring the clean-up.”
