Thousands of people turned out for the annual Norden Christmas lights switch on on Saturday (3 December), hosted by NEEVA (Norden Environmental & Economic Village Association).
Norden was once again set for another special evening. The colourful lights were switched on by the Mayor of Rochdale Syed Ali Ahmed and Deputy Mayor of Rochdale Michael Holly, who was joined by Father Christmas, his elves and the Grinch, which was followed by a superb firework display.
Children also had the chance to meet Father Christmas in Santa’s Grotto at The Aesthetic Rooms, with a few treats for those on the ‘nice’ list.
Villagers enjoyed variety of seasonal treats, including traditional mince pies, mulled wine and black peas, plus food from Wildbloods of Norden, Catherine's Café and coffee shop, The Pizza Van.
The public were also treated to Christmas dance performances by Fab Dance and a chorus of classic carols from the choir at Whittaker Moss Primary School and PTA.
Hosting the event was Dave Sweetmore, with lighting, snow machine and a stage all set up by DJ Tommy and the night was stewarded by NEEVA volunteers.
Festive Co-op, which the winner will be annouced soon.
NEEVA Chairman Paul Ellison said, “It's been a few years since the event was last on, due to Covid. We always like for Norden to have these big celebrations. The village has gone from strength to strength and it was so extremly well attended, I believe a record attendance, thousands descended into the village.
"I would like to thank everyone who helped make the night as magical as it was, the shops, the market traders and everyone who came out, especially the volunteers."
"A special thank you goes to the Norden WI, H Bell and Sons, Caroline Yates, Rachel Greenwood, Phil Starr, Michael Scott, Andrew Dunham, Emma Metcalfe, Sandra Trickett, Sian Fionn, Angus Pickup, Christine Mchugh, Chrissie Wolstenholme, Benjamin Boothman from The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation, Andrew Nutter from The Bird at Birtle, Rochdale Borough Council, Johnny Roberts from Total Smart Solutions Norden. After the switch on of the lights and fireworks, this officially declares Norden ready for Christmas.
“It was great to see a well-attended event supported by a large number of villagers and so many young residents who seemed to have a particularly good evening.
“Extensive support of the businesses and companies and local residents, highlights the message that as we approach the festive season, Norden has a vibrant and diverse heart. Many thanks are due to all who staged and participated on this very enjoyable event.”
