Rotary Middleton donates slow cookers to those in need

Date published: 03 December 2022

The Rotary Middleton group has given over 140 slow cookers to people who are struggling with the costs of fuel and food this winter.

The local humanitarian group teamed up with their partners to gift a slow cooker to those identified by support groups as being in dire need.

Slow cookers are a very low-cost method of cooking when compared with more traditional forms of cooking. An electric cooker can cost 87p per day and a gas cooker 33p per day, but a slow cooker is just 17p per day.

Working with household and garden retailer Wilko, business electronics supplier Curry's Business, Middleton Voluntary Aid to Sickness Fund, Co-op, Middleton Shopping Centre, local printer Sign and Print Direct and The Lighthouse Project, the scheme donates a slow cooker, cookbook, £5 Aldi voucher and support leaflet, to those who maybe struggling with their bills amidst the cost-of-living crisis.

Rotary Middleton funded the scheme using proceeds raised through the annual Christmas Float tour of Middleton last December, along with a generous donation from Middleton Voluntary Aid to Sickness Fund of £500 and an additional donation of £150 coming from the Co-op.

Wilko supplied 100 of its own-brand slow cookers at £14 each, a saving of 36% off the original price of £22.  Curry's Business supplied 42 smaller slow cookers for £13.79 each, the original price being £17.98.

Lee Wolf, President of Rotary Middleton, said: "Rotary is all about communities, whether it's here at home, or around the world, Rotary is a dependable and willing group of people wanting to help others.

“We devised this scheme in the face of growing pressures on household incomes, from both fuel and food price rises. We quickly realised that there are people here in Middleton, who may have to choose between food or fuel - this cannot be acceptable. Our scheme sees 142 slow cookers being distributed to those in greatest need this winter. Also included is a £5 Aldi voucher that can be exchanged for the ingredients for a first slow cooked meal, and a handy cookbook with low-cost slow cooker recipes.

"I'd like to thank all our partners who've helped make all this possible, along with members of the Rotary Middleton Team who've helped make this scheme a great success.

"Rotary Middleton is always at the very heart of Middleton and has been for almost 90 years. We believe in giving our time and efforts to help others, and if you think like us, why not get in touch and join us?”
