Rooms for hire at Old Carnegie Library

Date published: 28 November 2022

Conference rooms are available for hire at the Old Carnegie Library in Castleton.

Located next to the Co-op and a few minutes’ walk from Castleton train station, the building is split between The Friends of Carnegie Library and local business, The Carnegie.

Downstairs features the office for the company that owns the building and the research room for The Friends of Carnegie Library.

The upstairs and outdoor area of The Carnegie can be rented out to the public for events, meetings, conferences, seminars, training sessions, networking, team building and much more with their beautifully redesigned boardroom and training rooms for any professional purposes for up to 36 people along with a bar, toilets, balcony, outdoor seating and kitchen.

Jack Donnelly from The Carnegie who manages the building said: ;“We are proud to work in this historic building every day which is why we want to rent out the upstairs for other people to use so they can take advantage of this historic and beautiful property.

“The owner noticed the condition the building was in and spent years bringing it back to life. It was no easy task, but it paid off and we are glad that people no longer have to drive past a derelict building."

The Old Carnegie Library was built in 1905 after philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated £2,500 for it to be built. Sadly, it was left abandoned and derelict in 2006.

After a five-year battle, 10 years later, in 2016, The Old Carnegie Library was refurbished by a local businessman who purchased the building with the support of the campaign group The Friends of Carnegie Library. The community was thrilled that life would be brought back to the deteriorating building.

Many of the original features of The Old Carnegie Library have been beautifully restored, whilst other parts of the building have been modernised, complementing the original design.

Andrew Carnegie believed strongly in education, and The Friends plan on keeping his belief strong by researching the history of Castleton every week to ensure the past is remembered and never forgotten.
