Date published: 22 July 2022

The hottest day on record across the UK on Tuesday 19 July saw the mercury soar to a record-breaking level in the Rochdale borough.

During the heatwave – which saw the Met Office issue its first ever Red Extreme heat warning – temperatures in the Rochdale borough reached 37.2°C. Temperatures the day before reached highs of 34.5°C.

The recent temperature breaks both previous records for the hottest July day and the hottest day ever since records began, the Met Office has confirmed.

The previous hottest day on record was also recorded in the month of July in 2019. At the time of publication, the Met Office said the temperature reached 32.7°C but a high of 33.9°C was later confirmed.

Prior to this, the hottest day ever recorded in the borough previously was on 9 August 2003, when the mercury reached 31.2°C.

Previously, the hottest July day on record was recorded on 1 July 2015, with a temperature of 31.1°C.
