Man charged with murder after New Year's Day knife attack

A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder after the New Year's Day fatal stabbing in Rochdale.

Hassan Suliman, of Rochdale, has been charged with murder, assault, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a bladed article.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Wigan Magistrates Court on Thursday 9 January 2025.

The charges relate to the murder of a 38-year-old man, who was found with a severe knife wound on Essex Street in Rochdale on New Year’s Day at around 2.40am (Wednesday 1 January 2025).

Hassan Suliman has been charged with the following offences:

  • Murder
  • Section 47 assault
  • Section 39 assault
  • Possession of an offensive weapon
  • Possession of a bladed article  

He has been remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Wigan Magistrates Court on Thursday 9 January 2025.

Detective Inspector Paul Davies from our Major Incident Team said: “I would like to once again pay tribute to the victim. It is another tragic incident that has seen a member of the community in Rochdale, needlessly lose their life. We have been, and will continue to support his family at this difficult time.”

“We are still appealing to anyone with any information to continue to call us on 101 quoting incident 715 of 01/01/2025. That includes footage from video doorbells, dashcams, CCTV or mobile phones that could have captured the incident or the moments before or after it.”
