Scam warning: doorstep crime
Doorstep crime is currently on the rise in Greater Manchester, police are warning.
Fraudsters are knocking on victims’ doors, pressurising them into buying goods or services they don’t actually want or need, or is of poor quality and value for money.
Police are also asking people to stay vigilant for family, friends and neighbours. Fraudsters often target vulnerable members of the community such as the elderly, many of whom now have less contact with others due to Covid-19 restrictions. Make regular contact with vulnerable family or friends to check they are okay and offer support if they need it.
How to protect yourself

- Always lock your doors, even when you’re at home.
- Ask for references from previous customers or to see examples of their work.
- Always ask for identification before letting anyone you don't know into your house.
- Check credentials, including a permanent business address and landline telephone number.
