Highways England to clean up motorway slip roads following council leader's intervention

Date published: 06 September 2017

Highways England has agreed to carry out immediate work on Junction 19 and 20 of the M62 and the approach to Junction 4 of the A627M following a meeting with Council leader Richard Farnell.

Councillor Farnell contacted the government body to complain about the rubbish and overgrown vegetation collecting along the main motorway slip roads.

Agency boss, Andy Withington, also revealed that a new maintenance programme will come in to force next year which should tackle the vegetation issue head on.

Councillor Farnell said: “I have been concerned for some time now that the borough’s slip roads were starting to look untidy and something needed to be done.

“The council has made significant progress in keeping our borough clean and tidy, but these roads were letting us down.

“I am grateful to Highways Agency and in particular Andy for taking the time to come to Rochdale to not only discuss the issue, but look for ways of resolving it.

“The public should see a positive change by the end of the month and hopefully should not have to suffer the same problems in future.”
