National award for Rochdale Town Centre pubwatch scheme

Date published: 01 November 2016

Rochdale Town Centre Pubwatch scheme has received a Highly Commended award for its role in the reduction of alcohol-related crime, and its commitment to partnership working, both with statutory agencies and voluntary organisations such as Street Pastors.

The award was presented at the Diageo National Pubwatch Awards during a packed ceremony in the House of Commons, with MPs, Lords and notable names from the pub industry in attendance.

The National Pubwatch Awards, sponsored by Diageo GB, encourage and recognise the work of local Pubwatch schemes throughout the UK and their efforts to provide safe drinking environments for customers and staff. Each local organisation works closely with local police to reduce alcohol related crime, and provides local pubs with information and guidance on how to create safer drinking environments.

Now in its fifth year, the entrants were judged by a panel of National Pubwatch Committee members and industry experts.

Also present were JD Wetherspoon Director Nigel Connor, Chris and Michelle Riley from The Regal Moon, Sergeant Gaz Davies from GM Police and Simon Danczuk MP.

Mark Foxley of Rochdale Town Centre Management said: “We’re incredibly proud to support the scheme and for Pubwatch to win this award. Rochdale Town Centre's evening and night time economy is set to grow and Pubwatch plays an important role in the safety of customers and staff. Thanks to all venue participants, GM Police, licensing, agencies and the tremendous Street Pastor volunteers."

Councillor Richard Farnell, the leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Good well-run pubs and bars and a thriving nigh time economy are what every town wants. We have some great places in Rochdale town centre, and these awards are proof of that. It’s no secret that

"I am determined to build on what we have to create a more diverse range of places for people to eat and relax during the evenings.”
