Business Opportunities in Burma

UKTI is holding an event to discuss business opportunities in Malaysia and Burma. In association with ASEAN UK Business Forum, the seminar will give attendees the opportunity to meet experts with knowledge and experience of Malaysia and Burma, and find out more about the trade mission to the area in June this year. Speakers will include Clive Drinkwater, UKTI Director Northwest, and Najihah Abas, Director of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority. The seminar takes place on 3rd May in Trafford Park. For more information call Philomena Chen on 0776 483 6919 or email events@uktinorthwest.co.uk

Members get Royal Seal of Approval

Three Chamber members have won Queen's Awards for Enterprise in recognition of their export success. One of the winners was Irlam-based Metalube, which manufactures lubricants for the wire and cable industry and exports to over 80 countries. Trafford Park outdoor clothing manufacturer Regatta won an international award for the second year running. The third winner was Tenmat, a specialist manufacturer of composite materials, including fireproofing, which is also based in Trafford Park. Last year, Tenmat won an innovation award, while this year it received an international award after its export sales grew by 20% year on year for the last three years.

Meet the IT Crowd

The key protagonist at our next Business Leader Lunch on 8 May will be Phil Smith, UK & Ireland CEO of world-leading IT specialists, Cisco, and Chairman of the UK Technology Strategy Board. Not surprisingly, Phil is passionate about technology and is involved in a variety of initiatives, including his work with thirty UK CEOs who compete in Triathlon events to raise money for charity! Join us to get an insight into Phil’s world and to put your questions to him.

Constructing Success

Businesses within the property and construction sectors have a lot to look forward to, with not one, but two events on the horizon. Lancashire County Cricket Club has undergone a comprehensive programme of some £40m of upgrades and improvements recently and we’ve organised a technical tour to view the new Pavilion on 30 April. Then, on 17 May, we’ve got a seminar on procurement with speakers from the NW Construction Hub, Manchester Airport Group and Bruntwood.

Green Business News

Renewable energy and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects have been given a second chance to apply for millions of pounds of European funding, in a new call for applications. Meanwhile, foreign ministers meeting in London for the G8 meeting have called for environmental policy to be strengthened and for action on climate change to be intensified “as a matter of urgency”.
