Commenting on the Department for Transport’s announcement of an additional £4.2bn investment in upgrades to England and Wales’ rail network, Tony Attard, chairman of the Institute of Directors North West, said: “It is great to see that so many essential rail upgrades will now go ahead. Businesses depend on swift and reliable passenger and freight connections, and today’s announcement will come as very welcome news.
"We are particularly pleased to see electrification of the Midland Mainline, electrification of the Great Western Main Line to Swansea, and the full funding of the Northern Hub. We have long been calling for the Northern Hub to be given priority and it is reassuring to see that Government is listening to the concerns of businesses in the North.
"Rail is essential for a sustainable competitive economy, the investment in north west rail infrastructure coupled with HS2 will be a much needed economic boost to Industry."
