Harwood pupils get Water-Wise

Students at Harwood Park Primary School received advice about how to stay safe around water during the summer

Students at Harwood Park Primary School have been receiving advice about how to stay safe around water during the summer this week. Louise Raines from Link4Life delivered the special assembly ahead of the summer holidays; a time when the warm weather can entice children to play in or around water.

The message comes just weeks after a man had to be rescued by firefighters after getting into trouble whilst swimming in the Rochdale canal. Following the rescue David Acton, Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, said: "Greater Manchester has some fantastic scenery to enjoy in the good weather but our rivers, canals, reservoirs and other bodies of open water should be admired without giving in to the temptation to take a dip.

"There are many dangers involved in getting into water that isn't intended for swimmers - the water is often much colder and a different depth than expected, anything can lie beneath the surface and even strong swimmers can be taken by surprise by the currents."

Children learned about the dangers of playing too close to water spots, such as canals and reservoirs, and the risks associated with paddling or swimming in open water. They also learned what they should do if they or anyone they know does get into trouble in the water. Louise was assisted by a special eight-legged friend who helped to lighten the serious message and got the children involved in some related activities.

The visit was also an opportunity for the Link4Life team to encourage children and their families to visit the Heywood Sports Village this summer, and take part in the many activities that will be offered there, including swimming in a safe, supervised environment.

Headteacher, Lisa Zychowicz said: “With the summer holidays just around the corner, the message that was put over to the children was a really important one. Not just about water safety, but also keeping active and using the brilliant sports facilities that are available to them. Louise was a great guest and the children particularly enjoyed having an octopus in the hall.”
