Tape Ball Cricket in aid of Hospice

Date published: 27 September 2009

Cricketers from near and far joined together today for a charity cricket event raising money from Springhill Hospice.

Teams from across Lancashire and Yorkshire met at Oulder Hill School astro turf pitch  to take part in a fun filled fundraising cricket tournament.

However, this wasn’t any ordinary cricket competition, it was a game of ‘Tape Ball Cricket’ - the teams use a tennis ball wrapped it in tape rather than a traditional cricket ball.

The day was organised by Khalid Bashir of the British Asians Sports and Arts Foundation (BASAF); he was particularly pleased with the turnout, he said: “ We have ten teams here from across Lancashire and Yorkshire, throughout the day we have had around 400 people here.”

Each team pays £50 to take part and sponsor money contributes towards the final figure.

Mr Bashir added: “It’s really great to be fundraising but also it is a way of meeting new people and getting everybody together, we have had some very good players here today.

“In the future we may open the event to anybody who is interested who hasn’t played before for some fun and games.”

Waseem Shazad from Rochdale was happy to have taken part for a good cause, he said: “I didn’t play today but I did help out with the promotion and poster printing, it’s a really good fundraising idea.”

Faisal Hussain (22) from Oldham said: “I have a good day; I think they should hold more things like this because there isn’t a lot going on for the young.”

Mohammed Siddique travelled from Bradford for the tournament, he said: “Tape ball is something different; we have had four or five games.” He added: “I haven’t been to anything like this before but I would really like to take part in something similar again.”
