Mayfield preview

Date published: 05 February 2014

Mayfield entertain Swinton side Folly Lane at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday, in the first round of the Oldham Standard Cup.

Coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth were reasonably pleased with the win against Premier Division Skirlaugh last week with the atrocious conditions dictating play.

This week they hope will be slightly better, giving Mayfield the chance to play the open flowing rugby that has become their trademark.

There were five players unavailable last week who will be looking to impress in training along with a couple of the team that played with the NWML side, hence there is fierce competition for places. This is a great position for the coaches and club to be in. All good sides need to have some strength in depth and that is certainly apparent at Mayfield at the moment.

Folly are not a team to be underestimated, they will be playing their rugby in the NWML Premier Division after gaining promotion last season as Division One champions. They have signed a couple of new players and their training has reportedly being going well.

A spokesman for Mayfield said: "We will go into the game with the same degree of preparation as we do for any game and will be 100% focused on reaching the second round of the Standard Cup."

The game is sponsored by the Mayfield committee and guests.

Fixture: 08/02/14
Standard Cup: Mayfield v Folly Lane - Kick Off 2.30pm
