Cricketers recognised at awards ceremony
Date published: 18 April 2011
The second award ceremony of Rochdale Sports and Cultural Links (RSCL) was held at the Roti Restaurant, Drake Street, to celebrate the sporting achievements of young people involved with Rochdale’s Premier Indoor Cricket League.
Over 40 people attended the evening and among the guests were Simone Danczuk MP, Karen Burke, Ghulam Rasul Shahzad and Chairman of RSCL Tahir Mahmood.
This year’s first division league winners were Rochdalians, the second place was a tie between 8 Stars and Speed Stars. The second place was awarded to Speed Stars due to 8 Stars failing their commitment to the playoff. The second division winners were Bury Panthers.
The evening was started by Abdul Quyyom (Vice Chairman and organiser of RSCL), welcoming and thanking all the guests and players for attending the ceremony.
He said: “This year’s league was even more successful then last year. This year 14 teams took part compared to 10 teams last year. This success was also due to the determination and dedication of RSCL committee members M. Siddique, A. Quyyom, Haji Zafar and Tayab and all the players.”
The evening then proceeded with a number of cups and medals being presented to the young players of the Rochdale borough in front of friends and various dignitaries.
While presenting awards to the League winners “Rochdalians”, Simon Danczuk (MP) praised the organisers, Abdul Quyyom, and M Siddique for their efforts in organising these sporting activities for young people and congratulated the winning teams (Rochdalians and Speed Stars) and also encouraged other teams to do better next year.
Mr Ghulam Rasul Shahzad also praised the organisers and congratulated the winning teams. He also praised the other teams and players for taking part in the tournament while presenting trophies to runners up (Speed Stars).
