Carnegie champion schools gets underway

Date published: 08 November 2010

This week will see Rochdale schools enter the national Carnegie Champion Schools rugby league competition first round.

The road to Wembley starts in Wigan, with Rochdale entrants being drawn away at Wigans 1st seeded team.

That means trips to St John Fishers for St Cuthberts year 7 & 9 teams, while the year 10 team will play Standish. Hollingworth head to Abraham Guest and St Edmond Arrowmith at year 8 and 11 respectively.

St Cuthberts will come up against the team formerly coached by community coach Danny Pyke, Abraham Guest.

Pyke commented: "Wigan away is a tough draw for our teams, but if we want to progress we have to play the big boys! I have seen our teams play this year and we are going ok. After last years march to the semi finals by St Cuthberts, we have shown that anything is possible! I coached the Y7 team at my old school, Abraham Guest last year and I am sure that St Cuthberts can more than match them'".=

Teams earned the right to represent the town following performances in the Rochdale Schools Cup last year. The first round fixtures will be organised between the school themselves and must be completed by 12 November.
