Mayfield 32 – 18 Myton
Date published: 13 September 2010
Rochdale Mayfield travelled to Hull on Saturday (11 September 2010) where they faced an in form Myton Warriors. This is a long trip on the best of days but the journey was made worse after getting stuck in traffic for an hour.
The Rochdale side arrived late and were rushed into the game without their usual preparation.
Strangely this didn't seem to have affected the team as they came out of the dressing rooms buzzing with confidence it soon became apparent though that the bus ride had taken it's toll on Mayfield, and some very poor defending saw the Hull side run in two early, unanswered tries Mayfield finally rallied and with some booming defence from the likes of Coombes, Moroney and Moores, coupled with the direction of O’Brien Mayfield began to take control of the game.
After a Ben Butterworth chip from a late first half scrum, Simon Moore managed to capitalise on the excellent support play of Sampson and Foy, crossing for the score.
Wayne Corchoran converting for Mayfield’s first six points of the game. The second half saw the Mayfield ascension continue, with O’Brien directing play and with the introduction of coach Sam Butterworth, Mayfield seemed to have a new found sense of direction, an unfortunate incident saw Captain Benn Coombes leave the pitch with an injured knee, but this didn’t deter Mayfield.
Their good form continued, with Kershaw and Sampson working hard to take the Rochdale outfit forward which allowed Corcoran to break and slip a neat inside pass for Moroney to go under the sticks, Corchoran duly converted.
The game continued in Mayfield’s favour with Foy crossing in the corner only to spot a gap and nip in under the sticks to give Corcoran an easy conversion.
Mayfield 18 Myton 10.
Some slick handling saw Kershaw make a neat break to draw the full back and pop an inside pass to Sam Butterworth who ran in a further four points, the conversion was missed.
More good handling from Moore and Foy with more excellent support from Butterworth saw the latter touch down, Gleeson adding the extras.
A lull in Mayfield’s dominance allowed Myton winger Lee James run in two tries both from kicks.
This was a wake up call to the Rochdale side who again upped their game the increased pressure allowed Ben Butterworth to intercept and sprint 45 metres to touch down, Corchoran converting to complete the scoring at 32 - 18 and give Mayfield their first two points of the season.
Man of Match went to Andrew Moroney, however he was closely pushed by Kershaw and Sam Butterworth.
