Mayfield second team away to Bamber Bridge
Date published: 06 September 2010
Mayfield’s second team were handed the tough task of Bamber Bridge away as first game of the season but the lads were up to the challenge every step of the way.
The game was a tough battle throughout with huge hits piling in from both sides, Although Mayfield started the stronger in the opening encounters it was Bamber that struck first off the back of a couple of penalties to score under the sticks giving them a 6-0 lead.
Mayfield continued to push and off the back of a well worked exit set Simpson hit Lane out wide for the powerful centre to claim his first try of the season in the corner.
The pressure continued to build for the field and the introduction of Pirouzan as half time approached proved pivotal as the big Iranian took a swarm off defenders with him close to the line he then offloaded for Marsland to walk in for Fields second.
Half time Bamber 6 Mayfield 8.
As expected the home side came back strong at Mayfield but the relentless work in the middle of Ellis, White and captain Biggins kept them at bay, with two occasions Mayfield holding players up over the line.
Mayfield responded with the structure that had brought success in the first half again an expansive set finishing with a score for Duffy out wide.
From there on in it was a question of who wanted it most and even though Mayfield’s structure and pattern of play was impressive for the first game of the season it was the sheer determination as a team to keep the hosts at bay that stood out the most.
In the dying seconds there was a brief flash of times gone by as Mayfield fought to get out of their own half Simpson put his hand up for a drive, he was lined up by a huge prop forward from Bamber, a player well known as Jacko and has been a thorn in Mayfield’s side many times over the last few years. As Simpson took the ball, Jacko shot of the line only to be left to grab fresh air as Simpson through a dummy and side step Sammy Butt would be proud of to the delight of the Mayfield spectators.
Man of the match for Mayfield given by Bamber were 1) Paul Hancock 2) Mark Biggins 3) Dave Ellis, but every player to a man can be proud of themselves for the character shown to take the 2 points.
