Mayfield v Milford

Date published: 06 September 2010

The large crowd at the Mayfield sports centre on Saturday were left feeling disappointed after a lack lustre performance from the home side. On a perfect day for rugby the spectators arrived hoping Mayfield were going to live up to their billing and turn in a performance worthy of promotion contenders, they were sadly mistaken.

Milford kicked off the game and the Mayfield full back failed to collect the ball gifting the opposition possession on the ten metre line within minutes they had chalked the first try of the season which was duly converted.

The home side tried hard there was no lack of effort but to much dropped ball and squandered possession cost them dearly, Steve Wood scored a good try after good work down the middle by the Maroney and then Robinson.

At times during the game Mayfield produced some excellent attacking rugby only for the ball to go to ground at the final pass. This caused frustration among the players and confidence suffered.

The visitors took full advantage and attacked at every opportunity but they too played a game strewn with mistakes in fact it was only the kicking game orchestrated by their scrum half which separated the two teams.

Mayfield at times appeared to try too hard when, if they had stuck to the game plan they would surely have beaten this mediocre Milford side.
The lead changed hands a couple of times and two tries from Mayfield’s Todd

O’Brien looked like they could have sealed a victory and with Maroney Chris Brett and Ben Simpson punching holes up the middle this looked like two points for the home side, but once more the Milford scrum half secured position with a downfield kick and they claimed the lead for the final time a drop goal added at the end sealed victory for the visitors and there could be no complaints from the home crowd about the result.

This was a game Mayfield should have won and won quite easily there were a lot of positives to come from the performance.

O’Brien was as last season outstanding and he was well supported by Maroney and Simpson.

As already stated the commitment was there the effort was there and the skill was there all that was lacking was the execution and a disappointed Butterworth will be working hard at putting that right at training.
