Cobras lead in Riley Cup

Date published: 23 August 2010

The second round of the Riley cup got underway last week with Rochdale Cobras, Littleborough, Rochdale Cobras ‘A’ and Rochdale Mayfield A all competing to lift the famous local cup which still has one week left to go.

The Cup is being played in a round robin format every Thursday night over three weeks with each team playing a total of 9 games with the eventual leader being crowned Cup Champions.

The rules are simple, 13 a side, 20 minutes a game with no half time and 1 point for a try with no kicking for goal.

Playing on their own pitch on Firgrove, Rochdale Cobras first team proved the strongest on the night winning three out of three with close games against Littleborough and Mayfield.

In another good game, Littleborough and Mayfield, finished with the latter talking the spoils in a very even and closely fought game.

Cobras now top the table with Littleborough in second but its all for Cobras to lose in the Final round of games being played at Mayfield this Thursday (26 August 2010). A win from the last three games should crown the Flying Horse based side Champions but Littleborough and Mayfield could still snatch it from them on the last game so the last round at Castleton Sports centre should be a lively affair.

Results for last Thursday's (19 August 2010) games are:

Rochdale Cobras 1 – 0 Rochdale Mayfield
Rochdale Cobras ‘A’ 0 – 3 Littleborough

Rochdale Cobras 2 – 0 Littleborough
Rochdale Cobras ‘A’ 0 – 3 Rochdale Mayfield

Rochdale Cobras 7 – 0 Rochdale Cobras ‘A’
Littleborough 0 – 2 Rochdale Mayfield
