Littleborough ARLFC hosted the first round of the Rochdale Riley Cup and took an early lead in the three week round robin tournament.
The cup being played by Littleborough, Rochdale Mayfield 'A' , Rochdale Cobras and Rochdale Cobras 'A' teams has proven an early success with all sides buying into the tournament in a combined effort by all clubs to put amateur Rugby league in Rochdale back on the sporting calendar.
In attendance was Hornets RL assistant coach Chris Hough, who commented: “There is some real talent on show out there. The Riley cup has been around a long time and it is great to see it back on the open age calendar again.”
The games were all played over 20 minutes with the normal 13 players a side with no goal kicking and in most cases were close affairs with competitive but good humoured contests.
Littleborough ARLFC just pipped Rochdale Cobras 1st team on points difference at the top of the league table, but it is early days and all 4 teams have a chance to win the cup which is wrapped up on Thursday the 26th August at Mayfield's, Castleton Sports centre.
This Thursday’s (19 August 2010) games are at Rochdale Cobras home pitches on Firgrove, KO for the first games are at 6:30pm with all 6 games over by 8pm. After the games food and drinks will be served at the Flying Horse Hotel.
A spokesperson added: “A special mention must go to Littleborough for hosting an excellent first round of the historic cup and also to the Cobras 2nd team (the misfits) bolstered by Whitworth Spartans and Rochdale swarm players and were very unlucky to not get a win over Cobras first team.
Thursday’s (12 August 2010) results were :
- Rochdale Cobras 1 – 1 Rochdale Cobras 'A'
- Littleborough 2 – 2 Rochdale Mayfield
- Rochdale Cobras 'A' 3 – 2 Rochdale Mayfield
- Littleborough 1 – 1 Rochdale Cobras
- Littleborough 6 – 2 Rochdale Cobras 'A'
- Rochdale Mayfield 0 – 2 Rochdale Cobras
