Mayfield combine rugby and music

Date published: 30 July 2010

Rochdale Mayfield is hosting a “touch and blues day” tomorrow (Saturday 31 July 2010) at the Mayfield Sports Centre.

The event is the work of Mayfield secretary Paul Scanlon Wells.

Mr Wells who is well known in rugby circles nationwide also has a deep rooted love of blues music.

“To combine the two things I really love has long been an ambition of mine. I can often be found in front of the mirror with a hairbrush for a mike belting out classic blues songs” said Mr Wells.

It’s hoped there will be six teams from Rochdale, Oldham and further afield competing in a touch rugby competition starting at 11.30am followed by a set from local covers band Strange Ways.

Also, kicking off at 1.30pm on the main pitch a Mayfield select team will take on a team from the British Asian Rugby Association, in a full contact game.

The opposition is very much an unknown quantity but being coached by ex England international Ikram Butt they are sure to be a fit, well drilled outfit.
